Self-Portraits

This is a brilliant book which I bought some years ago, but left untouched on my shelf. Recently, I decided to finish it and although it was a book written in 1891, the themes and human emotions explored are truly timeless.

The story is about obsession and how far one is willing compromise his integrity, his worth for the superficiality of physical appearance. Dorian Gray had his portrait done by a painter, Basil Hallward, who was infatuated with the young man and as a result produced one his finest works ever. Gray meets Lord Henry, a friend of Hallward, who shares his somewhat self-indulging world views that eventually lead to Gray’s moral decline. The disintegration of Gray’s values shows up in his portrait while none leaves its mark on his youthful face that remained so even as the years go by.

I heard Ben Barnes (Chronicles of Narnia, Prince of Caspian) is going to play the movie adaption of this story by Oscar Wilde. I can’t wait, not because it’s Ben Barnes, but because I want to see the story come to life!
